FIRST WORLD WAR
Hello friends! Welcome to a new Happy Learning video.
Today, I want to talk to you about one of the most tragic moments in the history of humanity, today, we’re going to learn about the first world war, also called The Great War.
The first world war started in 1914 and ended in 1918, it created conflict between the major global powers at the time, so the most important countries.
On one side, there was The Triple Entente, also known as “the allies”, consisting of Russia, France and Great Britain, and on the other side there was The Triple Alliance, that was originally Germany, the Austro-Hungarian empire and Italy, although Italy switched sides at the height of the war, in 1915.
The main cause of this war was the imperialism, meaning that all important countries wanted to conquer territories both within and out of Europe, in the colonies.
In that era in Africa and Asia, for example, there were many places where civilisation had not arrived yet, and the great European powers wanted the wealth and richness from those territories.
Also, the Industrial revolution in Europe had impoverished lots of people, so there were also severe social conflicts.
All that tension had to explode, and the war exploded with the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir of the Austro Hungarian empire. The murder was committed by a Serbian nationalist group called the black hand in return to the Austro-Hungarian empire’s attempt to keep the Balkan territories.
This murder made the war commence between Serbia and the Austro-Hungarian empire, and from then on there was a chain reaction.
Lots of countries joined the war defending their blocks. The Triple Entente, made up of Russia, France and Great Britain, supported Serbia, and during the war more countries joined them such as United States, Japan or Canada.
Germany, Italy, as members of The Triple Alliance, joined the Austro-Hungarian empire, and this block had countries such as Turkey or Bulgaria, amongst others, join them.
From that point on, there were four years of a terrible war, with more than fifteen million deaths, and the destruction of Europe, Far East, Africa and areas in the Pacific, gorgeous cities full of history…
But in the end, in 1928, the war finally ended with The Triple Entente as a victor, so that’s France, Great Britain and the rest of their allies, and the defeat of The Triple Alliance, the block that was lead by Germany and the Austro-Hungarian empire.
By the way, Russia left the war because in their territory there were great revolutions starting.
Between 1919 and 1920 there were various peace treaties signed, which is where the situation between victors and the defeated is decided, the most important one was the Treaty of Versalles… But sadly this treaty was the origin of the Second World War… that we will learn about in another video.
Before I say goodbye, I’d like to say that in Happy Learning, we hope that this never happens again, and that everyone in this world respects, and helps each other, so, we can all live in peace.
